Some Things We Can’t See
Over time the sidewalks on our property settled. But, unfortunately, it took years for them to become uneven and a hazard. Finally, when someone tripped over one of them, we fixed it. But why fix just that one section? What about all the others? So we hired a company that evened up all of the walkways.
It would be silly to wait until someone fell and seriously hurt themselves. Jesus doesn’t wait to tell us something is wrong in our thinking and behavior and needs immediate attention. We need to invite Jesus to dinner with the Pharisee. Welcome Him into our home. Get the feeling that He is sitting at your dining room table. What does Jesus see as He looks into your heart?
He called the Pharisee a “fool” to shock him so he would quit playing games with his relationship with Jesus. It’s the same as someone would call me a fool when people kept falling on our sidewalks, and I never fixed them.
We wash the outside of the cup but pay no attention to the inside of the cup. So do we keep on hurting ourselves and others? Why? Because we haven’t met Jesus where we need His mercy the most.
The Gospel Challenge:
Why not invite Jesus to dinner? What does He see that you don’t? Jesus provides a remedy. He says, “But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” Giving away our time, talent, and treasure for someone’s good changes our focus from us to others. What a sacrifice! No. What a joy! See how clean you feel and how clear your thinking is when life isn’t all about you.
IGNITE THE FIRE.
God bless you, my friends. Fr. Rick Pilger, I.C.
