Detours in Human Life Review/Foundation
Road construction can present a problem for commuters. First, we wonder how far it will take us out of our way. Then there is the time we lose; if the construction takes weeks or more, we must adjust when we leave home. We are grateful the road will be safer and smoother when they finish the construction.

What would happen if we ignored the detour signs? A big hole in the road could swallow up our car and us. But we wouldn’t know it until it happened. In today’s gospel, the “world” Jesus talks about is that big hole in the road. The “world” can swallow us up before we know it. So, we must pay attention and follow the detour signs.

There is a little voice in us called conscience. It will always tell us if we are going down the wrong road. I like to think that the detour bears a skull, indicating death if you do this. That gets my attention. Jesus will always protect us, but He will always respect our free will to follow a temptation or obey the detour sign. His way is protection and safety for us and others.

Listen to Jesus pray to His Father for us in times of temptation. “I do not ask that you take them out of the world but keep them from the Evil One.”

Gospel Challenge:
Before you retire at night, take a moment to listen to your conscience. Examine the different choices you make throughout the day. If you ignored the detour sign, that is the Lord’s will for you; tell Him you are sorry. Make a firm purpose of amendment to watch carefully for the detour signs tomorrow. Peace be with you.

Love Your Neighbor!
