I bless the Lord so many times for Fr. Eric Doyle, our professor of the Doctrine of Grace in the seminary. Our final exam was oral. I walked into his office, where two chairs faced each other, and we sat down. He grabbed my hands, looked into my eyes, and said, “The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is of super eminent importance. Everything is grace.” I walked away, realizing that God wanted to be with me in everything I think, say, and do.
And that is what I understand to be the narrow gate and road that Jesus speaks about in the gospel. So often, we try to do things independently without giving God a thought. Yet, He said that this road we travel so often is wide. We listen to so many other voices but not the voice in our innermost self, the voice of our Heavenly Father.
Our Heavenly Father, through His Son, gave us our Mother Church to discern His voice and will for all the decisions we make in our life. The teachings of the Church are not a buffet where we get to pick and choose what suits us and what doesn’t in life.
Our eternal salvation is not a hit-and-miss. We don’t have to guess or presume what is right and what is wrong. There are many voices out there, but only one that saves our immortal soul. It is the narrow road, and Jesus said, “how few are those who find it.” Please, God, we are among the few. If not, we can make a good confession.
Is there a teaching of Mother Church that we find challenging to follow? We can get back on the narrow road and through that narrow gate only through the grace of God. Pray for me, and know I pray for you every day that we can journey together, supporting each other every step of the WAY.
