Father Rick’s Two Minute Homily for Sunday, 3rd Week in Lent, A, March 12, 2023
John 4:5-5246 https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/031023.cfm
Jesus, Talk to Me. Don’t Make Me Laugh.
Imagine this woman going to the well of Jacob. She heard about Jesus and His miracles. Somewhere in her mind, she wonders what it would be like to meet him. Then she thinks, “Oh, don’t be silly girl,” He’ll never have anything to do with a person like you.”
`Then comes all the reasons: “I’m not holy enough. Shoot! I have had five husbands and living with a man now who isn’t my husband. Besides, he’s a Jew and a man who wouldn’t give me the time of day.
What’s this? What did that man say to me? “Give me a drink.” Is He out of his mind? Who is this stranger? I know He’s Jewish, and his accent gives him away. How does he know so much about me? He is not like anyone I have ever met.
Doesn’t he know Jews and Samaritans share nothing in common: cups, dishes, food, drink, worship space? But beyond these barriers of prejudice and expectations, he treats me like a person – not a pagan, Samaritan, or lawbreaker.
I want to be as free as he is.” And after a little conversation, she thinks: “So he is the Christ! Is this how the Messiah acts? I want to be like that: Free from all the taboos and lies that have kept me so alone, no matter how many lovers I have had.
“Just by this one conversation, I know I can be like that. I know! I’ll tell everyone I know, ‘Someone finally has loved me as a person, loved me for who I am.’ My legs won’t run fast enough to town. I want everyone to have this freedom!”
Gospel Challenge:
So goes this woman’s encounter with Jesus, her hidden thoughts, and her arguments about why she wasn’t worthy of Jesus’ love. When you approach Jesus in Holy Communion, what will be your thoughts when he says, “Give me a drink.”
