When I became pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church, I told each staff member individually, “People are always more important than our stuff.” Stuff will disintegrate, plans, decisions, and accomplishments will become history. But people remain with us for eternity.
In the gospel today, Jesus told a man to stretch out his withered hand. The Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath as they considered it work. And sure enough, Jesus healed the hand of the man in front of everyone. “Is it right,” he asked, “to do good or evil on the Sabbath?”
Curing and doing good on the Sabbath was “Sabbath time for Jesus. Giving to God what is his due, our worship/Eucharist, and giving to people what is their due. Jesus held no distinction between loving God and loving people. He prayed throughout the night to be with people throughout the day. The two loves became one in His heart.
“People are more important than our stuff.” Please notice how often you get frustrated when your stuff is interrupted by people. We need some Sabbath time with Jesus to have some healthy Sabbath time with others. Then, we will welcome interruptions even if we have to turn to the Lord again on the spot.
