The Chicago Bulls basketball team were in their prime. when I moved to Blessed Sacrament Church in 1995. Michel Jordan was to basketball what Tiger Woods is to golf today. One game he scored 63 points. Kids wanted to buy Michael Jordan shoes, thinking they could be like Mike. “I wanna be like Mike” was a popular line started by a TV commercial.
Jesus told the crowds and the disciples to do everything the Scribes and Pharisees told them to do (follow the Law) but don’t follow their example. Everything they did was for show. They had big heads and were too big for their britches, as my Mom and Dad would say, meaning, they are not who they think they are. Sadly, a prideful view of ourselves puts us a cut above everybody else in our own minds.
Who do you want to be like? We have a lot of heroes in the Catholic Church we call saints. Sometimes we may find ourselves wanting to be like one of them, because they lived a life worthy of Jesus. Everything they do is for the love of the Lord. They want to be like Him because they know they can do nothing without Him for their salvation.
Choose a saint and look them up on the internet. Blessed Antonio Rosmini became my favorite saint. He founded the Institute of Charity, the religious order I joined in 1973. His goal in life was to please God in everything because God is so worthy. And next, to put all our trust in God who takes care of all our needs. Jesus stated in the gospel that if our Heavenly Father feeds the birds of the air, how much more will He take care of us. Blessed Antonio Rosmini’s spirit of living the gospel helps me in my life everyday to be like Jesus. Who helps you? It could be someone living.
