In Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bradenton, Florida, I witnessed today’s gospel when Jesus fed thousands of people with so little, some barley loaves and a few fish. “Our Daily Bread,” run by the parish, fed people on 14th Street every day between 11 am and 1 pm. It was almost 1 pm, and I had a ladle left of soup in the pan.
All of a sudden, 50 more people showed up. I gave the last ladle of soup to the first person. When I looked down, it was full again and again and again. I ran out when the last person had their soup. This happened to me twice while serving the hungry at “Our Daily Bread.”
They all ate “as much as they wanted.” Isn’t it amazing how Jesus is as present today as He was on that mountain when He fed all those people with so little? )Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8.) Have there been times when you faced a task and had little, even nothing, to offer? Give it to Jesus. He works His greatest miracles when we are the poorest of the poor. You will be amazed at how much Jesus wants to help us in those moments.
Leave behind complaining, sorrow and anger. It’s hard for Jesus to work through us when we lose focus on Him. Simply pray, “Jesus, I surrender myself to You. Take care of everything.” And He will.
