Fr. Rick’s Two Minute Homily 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time C 09-18-2022
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time C 2022
Luke 16:10-13 https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/091822.cfm
TWO WORLDS THAT COME TOGETHER.
We live in two worlds these days, the haves and the have-nots. With a struggling economy, we have a struggling society. Some people saved up all their lives and are finding that they are dipping into those reserves. Others are starting to live paycheck to paycheck. Jesus presents a solution that brings together these two worlds.
The first reading of today’s parable can seem confusing. First, the master commends his steward for being crafty. But, yes, he overcharged people and put the extra in his pocket for when he was fired. Jesus invites us to look beyond the rightness and wrongness of the steward’s actions. The master commends him for using his short-term resources to prepare for his long-term future.
And Jesus then said, “Do you see. You are the stewards. “One day, you will be called to account before God. I have entrusted you with many good things for your life on earth. What do you have to show for it?” The world of the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ come together when we relieve others of their suffering.
Be an intelligent steward and store up a heavenly retirement. Then, at the pearly gates, there will be hundreds of people we never met who will testify on our behalf:
He helped me out. I had something to eat that day.
“She never expected repayment when I couldn’t pay.”
“Or he was a father to me when I had no earthly father.”
Perhaps you have made some of these friends in the opportunities presented to us in recent times through the Catholic Ministry Appeal, the Venezuealand, and African missions. If not, look for the next opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life.
When you think about it, we help people get through their struggles on earth. These same people do much more for us – they help us get into heaven. So let’s invest, not for ten or 20 years down the road but 10,000 years into eternity. Let’s continue being generous with what the Father entrusts us.
Bring the two worlds together and make some friends in heaven.
