If I held out in one hand a dollar bill and in the other hand a penny, which one would you take if you could have one or the other? You would take the dollar because it’s worth 100 times more than the penny. But what would happen if you didn’t know it was worth much more than the penny?
Herod experienced this in today’s gospel. He had the one man in front of him, sitting in prison, who could reveal the truth whenever he desired. This king, who had the world by the tail, feared what others might think of him. So, instead of taking something much more valuable than what he had in the world, he chose the penny, his petty, little kingdom, over the Kingdom of God.
It took the cardinal virtue of courage to overcome his fear to discover a greater good. An excellent place to start is to ask ourselves the question, “What do I fear losing the most?” It is necessary to have our priorities straight to have the courage to stand up for what is our greatest good. John the Baptist put his relationship with Jesus before anything else, even his life on this earth. This relationship, this bond, is the most valuable thing we can possess.
Gospel Challenge: It takes courage to put Jesus before our interests. Before we think about the right thing or the best thing to do, talk to Jesus from your heart about how things are going with Him and you.
