What Do You Consider Worthwhile?
Some things you hear strike you to the core, and you never forget them. Father Eric Doyle taught us the Theology of Grace in the seminary. Our final exam was oral. When I sat down in front of him, he held my hands, looked into my eyes, and said, “Everything is grace.” I never forgot it.
Then, still looking in my eyes, he said, “The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is of supereminent importance.” That is big time with the Lord. Life in this world and the next is all about relationships. That’s what I got from Father Eric Doyle’s class and final exam.
Our lives are so busy that we forget how meaningful relationships with the Lord and people are. It’s nothing we do intentionally, and sometimes it just happens. We’re good at doing things with and for them, but how much time do we spend with them? Do we take time every day to be present with them and get to know them that day? Remember, your relationships are valuable and significant.
John the Baptist, in the gospel, said, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven.” The only thing we will take with us into heaven is our relationships. Everything is grace, and the grace that trumps all the rest is our love (Holy Spirit) for God and each other. This love has the power to transform, to heal, and to bring us closer to God and each other.
God’s love is not an emotion. It’s an action word. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick. Even the simplest act of love for someone is given to us from heaven. A cup of cold water means everything to Jesus. These acts of love are within our reach, and they have the power to make a significant difference in someone’s life.
Gospel Challenge:
How many people will receive a gift from heaven through you today? Everyone? It’s already in you. Let it shine! Let it shine! Let it shine all day long, into the night!
Love Your Neighbor!
