Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, December 30, 2022

Finding Jesus in all the little things of life.

I’m sure we have seen a picture of the Holy Family as we find on a holy card where everything is serene and peaceful. But their family life is pretty much like any other family. They were real people who had real concerns, hopes, disappointments, and worries.

Yet we call them the “Holy” Family. It was not because their lives were carefree. Instead, it was because they strove to remain faithful in the middle of all their messes, even the ones they didn’t understand. They sought the Lord and found him in the little things of everyday life. That’s where holiness is born. It is tied to little gestures, as Jesus later explained, even giving a cup of cold water in his Name.

It’s the little signs of tenderness and affection: Showing gratitude for that warm supper, getting that lunch ready in the morning, getting that hug when we walk in the door, saying a blessing before we go to bed.

All simple gestures filled with love, and these simple gestures are all the things that make us feel at home with each other. They usher into our homes God’s dynamic presence because, as John, the apostle, teaches us. God is love and present in every simple act of love.

Gospel Challenge:

We find God in these domestic churches, the home. Faith comes to life in all the happenings of home, and life grows out of faith. I encourage you to discover the active presence of Jesus in your acts of love for each other.

Peace everyone.
