JUDAS OR PETER 

We can go a long time doing something sinful and not give it a second thought. But, please God, most of us will come to our senses before it’s too late, and we can never change our ways. 

The first line in today’s gospel hit me between the eyes, “Jesus was deeply troubled.” He knew the heart of Judas, who, on the night of the Last Supper, was going to betray Him. So we see that moment, Jesus’ first concern was not His suffering but the soul of Judas. “One of you will betray Me.” Sharing the same dish was a sign of deep intimacy in that culture. Jesus offered Judas the last opportunity to repent. Unfortunately, Judas dipped a morsel in the same dish as Jesus, and “Satan entered his heart. It was night.” Judas left the First Mass early.

Peter stated that He would give his life for Jesus. But we know he blurted out that night that He never knew Jesus. He even swore, “I don’t know the man.” Judas sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Peter went out and cried till he had no more tears. He was so sorry.

Jesus was deeply troubled in His heart for these two men. Is there anything we are doing or not doing that troubles Jesus? Let’s take heed not to let it go so far that it’s “night” in our souls and I can no longer see or hear Jesus. We provide Kleenexes in the confessional.
