Excuses are a dime a dozen, as the saying goes. Yet, on any given day, we are presented with challenges that sometimes require effort and sometimes courage. Our Bishop Gregory Parkes listened to parishioners around the Diocese for several months. He heard that for the faith in people’s hearts to grow, we have to step out of our comfort zones and “Courageously Live the Gospel.
I am witnessing people in our parish doing that all the time. Ministries in our parish grew to over 45 in number because people were not afraid to lower their nets into the deep waters of their hearts where God is at His best. A recent example is a call five parishioners answered to lead us in Catholic Ministries Appeal’s new initiative. They answered the call to go deep and caught the fire of generosity. It has been fun working with them. Know this: 100 percent of donations will help 50 charitable ministries in our Diocese of St. Petersburg. No monies will fund the administration of the Diocese.
St. Peter was faced with this challenge to go deep in his heart for Jesus. In today’s Gospel, He and his shipmates caught nothing all night. Finally, Jesus told them to put their nets out into the deep. Reluctantly Peter obeyed Jesus, and the catch was enormous that their boats were at the sinking point.
When pondering your gift to the Catholic Ministry Appeal or any charity, go deep into your heart before you go deep in your pockets. Then, I promise your heart will be filled with joy.
