Luke 9:51-56
“Resolutely”
Jesus had one enemy in this world, Satan. “Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). That confrontation took place on the hill of Mount Calvary. There was no other way for us to experience His mercy and live in the fullness of His divine life. So He “resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem.” When He gave up His spirit on the cross, it hit Satan like an atomic bomb.
People in a Samaritan village wouldn’t welcome Jesus because He was going to Jerusalem. So Jesus journeyed with His disciples to another village. That’s important. There was no retaliation or rebuff, except by James and John. They wanted to burn the place down with fire from heaven. So Jesus simply forgave them and moved on.
The gospel challenge: “Burning the place down is not a strategy God ever uses. Taking things into our own hands is a ploy of Satan. It is called “pride.” God is absent and can do nothing with us. Humility defeats pride in its tracks. Do an act of humility, make a cup of coffee for someone, Pick up a mess you didn’t make. Then, when you want to fix someone, go to the next village. Jesus knows what will save them.
