Matthew 9:9-13
It is not hard to imagine Peter carrying his load of fish from his boat to the tax collector’s booth. He’s been out all night in a rocking boat fighting the elements. How Peter and the rest of the people hated this man called Matthew! Yet, this man is sitting here doing nothing but taking his money and too much of it.
And now, what is this? This Jesus approaches Matthew and calls him to be his follower, just like he did Peter. Then Jesus sits down with him for a meal in Matthew’s house. It may take some time for me and you to live as Jesus lived. He says, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
The gospel challenge: Who is my Matthew that I must approach with the heart of Jesus? When the Lord reveals that person to you in prayer, discover what is best in your Matthew.
